LUFFA

Cylindrica

Luffa Cylindrica also known as Egyptian Luffa is an annual climber from the cucumber family. It will grow up to 2 m and is mainly grown for its fruit, which is used as wonderful natural sponge because of the exfoliating properties of the luffa fibres.

Sowing: Soak the seeds for at least 24 hours prior to sowing. Sow in sowing compost between January and March and maintain soil temperature of around 20-25 degrees. Seedlings should appear within 2 weeks. Once large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings in individual pots and allow enough space in the pot for good root system to develop.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as luffas are tender plants. Plant in full sun.

Tip:  Leave the luffa gourds on the vine as long as possible for the sponge to mature well.
