Quick Overview

A very unusual hardy tropical plant with large leaves, arranged spirally unlike the common gingers. The striking flowers appear in late summer or early autumn, forming large red cone-shaped bracts, with several, pure white, crinkled flowers protruding from each cone. Packet contents: approx 15 seeds

A very unusual hardy tropical plant with large leaves, arranged spirally unlike the common gingers. The flowers look like crepe paper hence the common name of Crepe Ginger. After the plant finishes flowering, the attractive red cone-shaped bracts remain.

Sowing: Growing Crepe Ginger from seed is relatively easy. Place the seeds in well-drained, fine compost, cover lightly with some compost or fine grit and keep moist at regular temperature of 15°C to 20°C. The seeds should germinate between 4 to 8 weeks, but sometimes may take longer. Once the first true leaves have developed, pot on the seedlings in larger containers.

Tip: This is a root hardy plant, so will withstand low temperatures in winter. It would still benefit from some protection if prolonged very low temperatures are expected.
