This is a fabulous giant herbaceous plant that will develop a breathtaking spire of bright, creamy coloured bracts which are held on strong tall stems. The pleated basal leaves are just as attractive and create a low protective skirt which is rich green and almost rounded with deep veining. It grows in the wild high in the Himalayas and other Asian countries. This is one of the world’s most desirable plants and, although it is a slow grower, it is worth the wait.
Sowing: Sow indoors at any time but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in the wet compost to break their dormancy. Cover the seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the depth of the seed size. If the seeds do not come up within 6 to 12 weeks the damp seed tray can be given cold treatment in a fridge for a few weeks. Once the seedlings have developed, transplant in larger pots. Once the plant is mature, it can be planted outside in permanent position.
Tip: The seeds can be very slow to germinate, so do not dispose of your seed tray if no germination occurs for a few weeks/months.
