A very unusual hardy tropical plant with large leaves, arranged spirally unlike the common gingers. The striking flowers appear in late summer or early autumn, forming large red cone-shaped bracts, with several, pure white, crinkled flowers protruding from each cone. The flowers look like crepe paper hence the common name of Crepe Ginger. After the plant finishes flowering, the attractive red cone-shaped bracts remain.

In maturity it will produce large fruits described as tasting of marmalade and smelling of roses. An attractive ever green, fast growing tree with pendulous drooping branches, leaves are greatly modified so that only the leaf teeth are visible at the nodes or joints. The number of leaf teeth varies between 6 and 8 per node. Cones are 2-3 cm long, 2 cm wide with small thin wings. Native to New South Wales and Queensland.
