The Chusan Palm is probably the most suitable palm to grow outdoors in cold climates. It can withstand low temperatures, it is easy to grow and looks spectacular once it has matured.

Preparation: Soak the seeds in tepid  water for about three days, change the water every day.

Sowing: Sow the seeds in sowing compost with coir, vermiculite or sand. Place the seeds just under the surface of the soil, water lightly and cover with glass or with a plastic bag to maintain temperature and humidity. Place on a windowsill, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.  Once small shoots appear, remove the cover. When the seedlings are strong enough to handle, pot them on.

Chusan Palm grows slowly and established plant with fan like leaves can take up to 5 years to grow.

Required temperature to germinate: 20-25⁰C

Germination time: 8-12 weeks, up to 6-8 months
