Eucalyptus globulus, the Tasmanian Blue Gum, is a fast-growing evergreen tree known for its strong aromatic scent and distinctive foliage. The bark is mostly smooth and pale – white, cream, or grey. The young plants have attractive, roundish, stalkless leaves with a blue-grey, waxy coating, giving the tree its common name. Mature leaves are long, glossy green, and sickle shaped. It is the primary source of commercial eucalyptus oil, widely used for medicinal and industrial purposes.

Sowing: Growing Eucalyptus from seed is easy. The seeds will benefit from a cold spell or stratification, so they can be placed in the fridge for a few weeks before sowing. Prepare pots with fine compost, water it well and let it drain. Sprinkle the fine seeds on the surface and cover with a plastic bag or place in a propagator to maintain warmth and humidity. Keep moist by gently misting the surface once it starts drying out. The seeds should germinate between 7 and 14 days.

Tip The tree can be restricted and grown in pots for easier movement. It will only tolerate light frost.
