Ficus Religiosa, also known as Sacred Fig, is a species of fig native to the Indian continent. It has beautiful leaves and in colder climates can be grown indoors as a house plant or planted outside once well established. Very popular as a bonsai tree, too.

Preparation: Soak the seeds in tepid water for about 12 to 24 hours.

Sowing: Sow the seeds in sowing compost with coir, vermiculite or sand. Sow the seeds around 0.5 deep in the growing medium and place them in either a propagator or cover with a plastic bag to maintain temperature and humidity. Once small shoots appear, move the seedling into good compost mixed with sand or vermiculite.

Required temperature to germinate: Daytime 22-25⁰C/Night 15-20⁰C

Germination time: 2-8 to 12 weeks

Tip: The tree should be kept indoors at least for the first two years before planting outside. Mulch well to protect from frost.
