Giant Himalayan Lily is a truly magnificent plant, which will produce stunning vanilla scented, trumpet-like flowers on stems up to 3 m tall. It originates from the Himalayas and the forests of China, so will thrive in semi- shady, moist conditions.

Sowing: Growing Himalayan Lily from seed is a long-term project and for the most patient gardener. They take long to germinate and establish. Sow indoors at any time of the year in a pot of peaty compost at a depth of around 2mm and cover with vermiculite or grit. Put in a cool dark place. Artificial heat is not needed and, in some cases, will prevent the seeds from germinating. Germination can be very slow; the seeds often need two periods of cold moist conditions with a warm growing period in between. The seeds should germinate in spring. Always keep the compost moist. Allow the seedlings to grow in a shaded cold frame and protect them over the following winter. Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Plant out the following spring into a nursery bed and grow on for a couple of years before planting into final site in spring.

Tip: Plant in large groups in the border to create a breathtaking effect.
