The Manila Tamarind is a thorny, evergreen tree with a rounded or spreading habit and bipinnate leaves. Its fragrant, greenish-white flowers are followed by coiled, reddish-pink pods that split to reveal seeds with an edible, sweet, white flesh.

Sowing: To grow successfully Manila Tamarind from seed, scarify the hard seed coat, then soak the seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours. Sow them in a well-drained compost at 20-25°C, keeping them consistently moist and protected from drying out. Germination can take between two and four weeks, sometimes even longer. Once the first true leaves have developed, pot on the seedlings in larger containers.

Tip: The tree is suitable for growing as a bonsai.
