The Portia Tree (Thespesia populnea), also known as the Indian Tulip tree or Pacific Rosewood, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree known for its showy, hibiscus-like flowers and heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are bright yellow with a dark maroon or red centre when they first open, but they can change colour to a deeper maroon, pink, or purple as they age.

Sowing: Before sowing the seeds, they should be gently scarified, then soaked in warm water for 24 hours. After that, sow the seeds in good compost just under the surface. Keep the growing medium moist but do not overwater. Place in a bright and warm location. Seedlings should appear in around 4 to 6 weeks. Once the seedlings are strong enough, they can be potted on.

Tip: The Portia Tree can tolerate a very light frost. In colder regions, it should be grown in a container that can be overwintered indoors, in a greenhouse or conservatory.
