Prosopis cineraria, commonly known as the Ghaf or Khejri, is a drought-tolerant flowering tree. It is highly valued for its ability to survive extreme desert conditions and for its wide range of uses, earning it names like “the Wonder Tree” and “King of Desert”. It produces small, creamy-yellow flowers that bloom in cylindrical spikes. These flowers appear during the spring and sometimes a second time in autumn, and they have a distinct sweet, earthy smell.

Sowing: Before sowing the seeds, they should be gently scarified and soaked in warm water for around 24 hours.  After that, sow the seeds in good compost around 2.5 cm deep. Keep the growing medium moist but do not overwater. Place in a bright and warm location and maintain moisture. Seedlings should appear in around 2 to 4 weeks. Once the seedlings are strong enough, they can be potted on.

Tip The Khejri tree thrives in nutrient-poor soil and does not require rich organic matter.
