This is a striking ornamental shrub or small tree producing large clusters of unusual flowers above evergreen compound leaves. It will do well in moist conditions. It is very fast growing, but is frost sensitive, so must be protected when hard frost is expected. In some countries the large flowers are uses for culinary purposes. The young plant is also great for creating a bonsai tree.

Sowing: Growing Vegetable Hummingbird from seed is relatively easy. Place the seeds in well-drained, fine compost, cover lightly with some compost or fine grit and keep moist at regular temperature of 15°C to 20°C. The seeds should germinate between 4 to 8 weeks, but sometimes may take longer. Once the first true leaves have developed, pot on the seedlings in larger containers.

Tip: To speed up the germination, prior to sowing, the seeds can be soaked for 24 hours or gently scarified so water can penetrate
