Exotic Plant
A popular hardy fan palm that will grow very tall in milder climates. It should be started in a pot and, once the plant has well established and grown to at least 1.5 m of height, it can be planted out permanently if required. It will tolerate subzero temperatures of up to -6°C. Otherwise, it can spend its whole life in a large pot and indoors. Will give every garden or conservatory/greenhouse that tropical look.
Sowing: Growing Mexican Fan Palm from seed is pretty easy and straightforward. Simply plant the seeds in fine compost, keep moist and warm and the seeds will start germinating within a few weeks in temperature of approximately 25°C to 30°C. Once the seedlings are strong enough to be handled, transplant in larger pots.
Tip: If planted outside, wrap up in hessian or fleece over winter to protect the leaves and roots from the frost.
